  1. Interviewed my aunt who grew up in New York City and performed the daunting task of working at Riker’s Island. If you don’t know what Riker’s Island is, it is a tough prison system that has seen many famous rappers such as Tupac and Old Dirty Bastard come through it, but is known for its tough and hardcore nature.

My aunt is educated and she said living in New York City all of her life has exposed her to different aspects in life. Being in an urban community it showed her different attitudes which helps her communicate with all types of people unlike living here in Oklahoma she said you would not be exposed to as many different people because it is ore conservative and not many different types of people like it is in New York City

Working In Rikers Island she said she didn’t see much difference in gender, but they would not let her do some jobs such as strip- searching a male unless it was an emergency. Sometimes she was treated different by inmates and had to act or walk harder to get respect from inmates.

Her history with feminism she said was not much. She has had more problems being a black person in America than a female. She said even though America has a black president we still have a long ways to go to become equal.

Feminism means equal rights for woman and men. That means in all aspects of life ranging from job pay to equal opportunities in education and learning.

I haven’t had many experiences in life that has made me conscious of gender but I do not slight subtleties in life that is different between women and men that should be different. For instance the thought that women she be at home with children while the male works. Or if parents divorce the women is usually the one who takes care of the child. IN my case when my parents divorced, my dad was the one who stepped up to raise me and I think people should applaud and realize that there are males out there who actually take responsibility for their children and are good fathers.

The readings are a good way to get another view of life. I think it is good to see that women do not just have to be in the kitchen are at home taking care of children. I do think women and men should be and are equal and have the same capabilities. A lot of men are chauvinistic and feel like they are better than women, but that is not true. Women have a lot to offer and should be treated with respect.
