A specific ad that offends me is the Belvedere Vodka ad, which has a woman reapplying her lipstick, as she looks nervous by a guy’s crotch. This offends me because it portrays women in the wrong way and makes them look like they are whores. The ad does play into stereotypes that make it seem like when you drink sexual things like this will happen. And it also makes me look like overconfident jerks and makes women look bad. It makes women seem weak and reliant on a man’s approval to be valid in life, which is totally not the case. The ad does not promote eating disorders, but I do think that it normalizes violence for men because if a man is drinking it becomes intoxicated they may feel it is their right now to receive oral sex from a woman because of this ad and resort to violence if they do not get their way. A consequence that this ad could have is it could make women start to act in this way to try and fit in, in what they think is a “normal” society, when in reality a woman does not have to engage in these activities to fit in. It also could promote sexual violence in men being outraged to receive the oral pleasures that they go overboard in trying to get it. This ad is overall ugly and should not have been made. It is not one bit funny and the woman in the ad should feel ashamed for posing for this disgusting advertisement. A young lady seeing this could get the wrong idea and be persuaded by this ad and it was not even intended for her to see. The company should have realized that the message will be seen by other people besides its target audience.
The ad that I like the most is the Oil of Olay ad. For one it goes against the grain. Most people have models that are blonde hair, blue eyes, with long stringy hair. This model is an African American model, with short hair that is more coarse and real. The model in this ad seems happy and pure. It shows that you do not have to be the stereotypical person to achieve happiness and I feel like this makes women feel good. The female who is unsure of herself can look at this ad and be happy and know that this product is for them and feel comfortable using it. They will not have to feel like they are being fake are changing who they are to use the product and I feel like that is important if the business wants repeat customers. The ad definitely combats stereotypes by using a black model with short hair. I feel that the ad doing this though is a great thing and needs to be done more often. I feel if more real life, everyday people were being used in the ads, instead of fake, superficial models, it would cause females to not starve themselves to think they are beautiful. They would feel comfortable with their own skin and not have to try and do dangerous things to achieve personal beauty. A man does not have to be masculine and disrespectful like the ad that was offensive. A man can be masculine, yet still respect women and that is what some people need to learn. I feel that some guys abuse their spouses because they want to feel in control and hate when a women does something they do not agree with and that is not right. This ad can only do positive things for women and their self- confidence. I feel this is a great ad and more ads should be like this. It is empowering for women and promotes diversity.
About the readings, I agree that women should be able to get abortions if they want to and I feel like it should be freedom of choice. I agree with everything she said about the abortions in relation to women. I also agree that women have an unreal image of reality because of the media and feel it is not right. The media's false reality of women makes women feel uncomfortable with themselves which leads them to do things to their bodies and go on extreme diets.
